Savory Spice Shop

There's an American Proverb which says "Variety is the spice of life".

And if you're fortunate to live nearby and shop at Savory Spice Shop, your motto might be "Life is a variety of spices!" Whether you're the occasional cook or a culinary extraordinaire - this is the place to get your herbs and spices. Boulder, home of Celestial Seasonings, also has also been blessed with the colorful presence of the Savory Spice Shop.

Located right off of the Pearl Street Mall, just a walk into the front door is a must-do experience. Visually, they have a down-to-earth look, yet the decor is what you might find in a Country Living magazine - perhaps Martha Stewart. But, AROMATICALLY... Ah! That's the part to really experience. They have tasters throughout the store and they encourage you to to actually throw what's left in your hands onto the floor. This potpourri of scents makes the experience of shopping for your spices, herbs, salts and other culinary ingredients a much richer event than just buying from a grocery store.

Another reason to skip the supermarket is because of the smaller quantities you can buy.... as little as half an ounce of any of their herbs, spices and seasonings. In fact, they recommend buying small amounts in order to continually use fresh ingredients.

So, if I haven't given enough reasons to check out the Savory Spice Shop in Boulder... here's one more: the staff! At Metroseen we like to brag about local businesses and to experience the reason for this in a real, 3-dimensional way - you must go to this place. They're a perfect example of local, of a heart-warming atmosphere and of great customer service. Not only do you get the freshest herbs and spices, the experience of shopping in a small, quaint downtown shop and the wonderful smells, but you also get a very friendly and knowledgeable staff. They know how to cook too!

Speaking of, I picked up a recipe card there and can't wait to get it on the stove!

Mike and Janet Johnston founded Savory Spice Shop in Denver back in 2004 and because of receiving so many requests to expand, they set up shop in 3 other locations. Dan Hayward, a Georgia native who moved to Colorado a decade ago, is the co-owner and managing partner of the Boulder store, located at 2041 Broadway in Downtown Boulder - just off of the Pearl Street Mall. While Mike and Janet's love for spices, cooking and even decor are extremely evident, Dan too is the embodiment of passion for the many culinary spices that he and his knowledgeable crew grind, blend, pack and send out the doors. Incidentally, Janet Johnston recently landed a mini-series on The Food Network called Spice & Easy!

Meet the Owner

Exciting news! Savory Spice Shop's Co-Founder, Janet Johnston has a new TV series on Food Network! The show is called "Spice and Easy" and features Janet Johnston cook up some tasty dishes featuring their spices, herbs, and seasonings (of course!).
