Zoe Montalbano: Hi, I’m Zoe with Metroseen, and I was at my dear friend Tai’s house for dinner one evening, and I had the most amazing Moroccan dish. And that’s the night that I had to know the secret to her success, so she told me about the Savory Spice Shop, and this place is really special.

Dan Hayward: Welcome to the Savory Spice Shop! My name is Dan Hayward, and I’m the managing partner of the Boulder store. My partners, Mike and Janet Johnston started this company in 2004 in Denver, CO. We are a local, neighborhood spice shop. We specialize in fresh ground spices, we make all of our own blends here on site, about 140 different blends that we make by hand in our kitchen in the back, everything ranging from curries to salad seasonings to barbeque blends… Pretty much everything you need to create a wonderful, beautiful dish.

We encourage you, as you walk around our shop, to try all the tasters. Just sprinkle some in your hand – part of the fun here is that if you get too much in your hand you can throw it on the floor. It really helps to add to the essence of our shop, and creates that beautiful aroma as you walk in our door.

Ellen Wagner: For me what I like is that I can buy really good organic herbs. I can buy extremely fresh cinnamon. I’ve seen them grind the sticks. I buy just about everything here that I possibly can, because I also like to support local businesses.

Sarah Blecher: I love the Savory Spice Shop! I work at the Culinary School of the Rockies, and we are the biggest fans of Savory Spice Shop. The quality, the freshness, the variety of all of the different spices in here makes such a difference.

Dan Hayward: We work with a lot of local restaurants – everyone from the very amateur chef to the very experienced chef as well.

Sarah Blecher: Whatever their flavor profile and palate likes, they will leave with something that makes them happy.

Dan: This is our vindaloo, and I’ve changed it up just a little bit… All the staff here are extremely knowledgeable. We are here to answer questions for you and to guide you. We love talking to people about food. This is what we do all day long, it’s part of our fun.

Jen Yu (@userealbutter on twitter): My friends had told me about this store in the past. I was immediately hit by this fabulous aroma, totally like a kid in a candy shop, I saw this amazing selection of spices. I could purchase them in small quantities, about ½ an ounce, which you really can’t get in a local grocery store.

Dan: You can buy as small as just half an ounce, so you’re not committed to buying a large portion of something you don’t really need. We want to make sure that you have the freshest product available.

Boulder has always thought of itself, especially over the last five to ten years, as a foodie town. And, we are very happy to fill that need. I’ve had many customers that come in and say ‘We are so happy that you’re here. We thank you for what you’re doing. You have changed my entire way of cooking, everything now is more vibrant, everything tastes better. I can’t believe how great my recipes turn out because of your spices.
