Mark Montalbano: Hi, I'm Mark with metroseen, I'm here at Sports Garage, one of the hippest and friendliest bike shops around town. Come on in!
Chris Jacobson: Hi, I'm Chris Jacobson. This is my store, Sports Garage. We are a locally owned and operated, Boulder, CO emporium of bicycles. We do bike fitting, bike service, if it pertains to two wheels and it's human-powered, we do it. We started the shop in 1994. I've been the owner since 2004, and we're just here to help people and make cyclists happy, and do it again and again.
We carry bicycles (laugh).
We carry a bunch of really carefully selected boutique bicycles - road bikes, mountain bikes, cycle-cross, track, all kinds of wonderful things. And the bikes that we carry fit people really well. They've got great manufacturers standing behind them. They're just the best in the business. So, the customers at Sports Garage, really, they share the common goal of being well-served, and learning how to ride, how to optimize their experience on a bike. So, we have folks that have never been on a bicycle all the way up to National Champions.
Actually, Allison Powers works here. She's our 2008 National Time Trial Champion, so it's pretty fun to have her fast wheels around here. Dave Ziegman, our service manager, is a professional downhill rider. Sam Johnson, a seasoned mechanic, is a professional-class 24 hour racer. One of our wonderful mechanics, Steve Shelp, is actually a former pro-trials rider, and actually his nick-name is "Shelptronic", and one of the employees here contends that Steve was sent from the future to teach us how to ride bikes.
The fitting process at Sports Garage takes about three hours. We start with a verbal interview. We do a physical assessment. We spend a lot of time figuring out who you are as a cyclist, and what your goals might be. Then we use a fitting device called the Serotta Size Cycle to determine your optimal position, plug that into a computer, and figure out what bikes work best for you. We set you up on those bikes for a test ride, and let you pick the one that works best.
